Minister for Finance, Hon. Esrom Immanuel, today delivered a powerful call for bold and forward-looking leadership as he addressed participants of Leadership Fiji’s Executive Leadership Program in Suva, urging leaders to move beyond recovery and focus on transforming Fiji’s economy for long-term prosperity.
Speaking at the Holiday Inn, the Minister emphasised that the defining challenge for Fiji is not simply recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, but making the strategic decisions necessary to build a stronger, more resilient and more productive economy for future generations.
Hon. Immanuel highlighted the rapidly evolving global landscape, noting that small island developing states like Fiji must navigate increasing uncertainty driven by geopolitical tensions, inflation, climate change and technological disruption. He stressed that while Fiji cannot control global forces, it can strengthen its own resilience through sound policies, stronger institutions and investment in its people.
Reflecting on the Government’s progress since taking office in December 2022, the Minister noted that Fiji has made significant strides in economic recovery, with tourism rebounding, employment improving and investor confidence gradually returning. However, he cautioned that recovery alone is not sufficient, calling for a renewed focus on long-term transformation.
Hon. Immanuel also underscored the importance of climate resilience, describing it as both an environmental and economic imperative. He noted that investing in resilient infrastructure and disaster preparedness is critical to safeguarding Fiji’s development gains and ensuring fiscal stability.
On fiscal policy, the Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to responsible financial management, highlighting that the 2026–2027 National Budget strikes a balance between fiscal discipline and continued investment in infrastructure, education, healthcare and climate resilience to support sustainable growth.
Concluding his address, Hon. Immanuel reminded participants that leadership is central to Fiji’s future success, calling on emerging leaders to act with integrity, courage and a long-term vision.
