Labasa is set to see a major boost in air connectivity and economic activity following the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Waiqele Airport terminal.
Officiated by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Professor Biman Prasad, the event marked a significant milestone for Fiji Airports Ltd and the people of the Northern Division.
Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Prasad highlighted the rapid economic growth in Labasa, citing major investments such as Extra Supermarket, Damodar North, Ramada Hotel, and commercial expansions by Vinod Patel, RB Patel, and Carpenters.
He also emphasised the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, including a major road project in partnership with China and a proposed solar farm initiative through Food Processors Limited.
“The Northern economy has been bustling, and both business and consumer activity have been on the rise,” Professor Prasad said.
“This new terminal is not just a construction project; it represents our commitment to enhancing Fiji’s infrastructure and connectivity for the benefit of every citizen.”
The new terminal, which will replace the aging Adi Laisa Terminal built in 1973, is set to be a modern, single-story facility covering approximately 1,000 square meters. The project is expected to be completed within 18 months.
“For 51 years, the old terminal has faithfully served the people of the North. However, with technological advancements and increasing travel demand, an upgrade is long overdue,” Professor Prasad stated.
He acknowledged Fiji Airports Ltd for its role in managing both international and domestic airports, ensuring vital air connectivity for Fijians. He also expressed gratitude to key stakeholders, including landowners, contractors, and private-sector partners, for their contributions to the project.
“This new terminal will bring heightened economic opportunities, improve domestic accessibility, and increase tourism traffic, all contributing to the growth and prosperity of the Northern Division,” he said.
“As we pour the first load of concrete today, we are not just building a terminal—we are laying the groundwork for the future and legacy of this region.”
The event concluded with Hon. Prasad reaffirming the Coalition Government’s vision for a moderniSed, well-connected Fiji, emphasising that the new terminal is a significant step toward achieving that goal.
“Labasa and the Northern Division are an integral part of our national development, and this project is a testament to our unwavering commitment to progress,” he said.
The new Waiqele Airport terminal is expected to play a crucial role in fostering economic development and strengthening the Northern Division’s connectivity with the rest of Fiji and beyond.
