The national conversation on Fiji’s future took a constructive step forward as the first public consultation for the 2026–27 National Budget was successfully convened in Suva.
Held at the University of the South Pacific’s SAFE PG lecture theatre at the Laucala Campus, the session brought together stakeholders, and members of the public in a collaborative effort to help shape the country’s fiscal priorities. The consultation was chaired by Minister for Finance, Commerce and Business Development, Hon. Esrom Immanuel, alongside Permanent Secretary for Finance, Shiri Gounder.
The forum highlighted the government’s commitment to inclusive and transparent decision-making, with participants engaging in open dialogue on key national priorities. Among the issues discussed were the need for sustained funding for arts and culture, strengthening tertiary healthcare services, and ensuring responsible and sustainable budget financing.
Participants also raised concerns around traffic management, the national response to HIV and drug-related challenges, and the impact of fuel price instability on households and businesses. Government representatives welcomed the feedback, reaffirming their dedication to addressing these issues through balanced and forward-looking policy measures.
This important engagement will directly assist in the formulation of a stronger, more responsive national budget in the coming days, ensuring that the voices of the people are reflected in the country’s development priorities.
The next public consultation will be held at St Vincent de Paul Parish Hall in Nausori tomorrow afternoon at 6.30pm, providing opportunity for members of the public to contribute to the national budget formulation process.
