Today marks a historic milestone with the signing of the Loan Agreement between the Government of Fiji and the OPEC Fund for International Development to support the Pacific Healthy Islands Transformation Project — the largest and most transformative health reform initiative in the Pacific.
Key highlights:
- Total project value: USD 181.94 million (FJ$418.06 million)
- Purpose: Strengthening health systems with emphasis on NCD management, early detection and modernized care
- Financing partners:
- OPEC Fund — USD 30m concessional loan
- ADB — USD 50m concessional loan
- World Bank IDA — USD 101.9m (concessional + grant)
Three project components:
- Strengthening regional health systems and the healthcare workforce
- Modernising Fiji’s health system and expanding person-centred care
- Improving evidence-based decision-making, stewardship and regional learning
This project aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan and Government’s commitment to stronger, modern and accessible healthcare for every Fijian. The borrowing remains within fiscal targets and reflects responsible investment.
